Young Galway actress Debuts in Famine Feature; Black 47. Ella Grace Lee was selected , following auditions, by award-winning director Lance Daly to play Roisin in Black 47, a movie with a central theme of retribution set during the Irish famine in 1847. Ella Grace plays the niece of Feeney, the main protagonist ,a hardened Irish Ranger, fighting for the British Army overseas ,who deserts his posting to return to Connemara in the West of Ireland. He is horrified by how his family have suffered under English rule :his brother hanged : his mother has died of starvation following eviction and he sets about delivering summary justice, avenging them. Hannah, his adversary is a specialist soldier renowned for tracking down army deserters and he is sent to Ireland to find and neutralise Feeney. The action unfolds against the backdrop of the great Irish hunger through a series of retributions by Feeney to a climactic final action scene.
The film stars Hugo Weaving of the Matrix and more recently Hacksaw Ridge, Oscar winner, Jim Broadbent, renowned Irish actor Stephen Rea and rising Irish actors Barry Keoghan, Moe Dunford and Sarah Greene. The role of Feeney is played by Australian Actor, James Frecheville, who manages Irish very well throughout the movie.
Irish actress Ella Grace says she "thoroughly enjoyed her experience on this Irish feature, especially working with, and learning from, such a renowned Director, and terrific cast and crew." She is the daughter of Irish artist Mary Cahalan Lee aka Pixi Ella Grace attributes her casting in this movie to the positive support of her mum and dad in all her creative pursuits, as well as descending from a long line of creative people.
The feature had its world premiere in February 2018 at the Berlin International film Festival and was shown at the Audi international Dublin film Festival in March 2018 . It was filmed on location in Wicklow and the Maam-turk mountains in Connemara as well as in Luxembourg
